Greenbelt:A Nostalgic Return to Texas Childhood
Greenbelt brought back childhood memories of a Texas lake and the antics one can get away with as a young kid. It reminded me of times that I had not considered in ages. Times when I was invincible.

The stories in this book transcend a regional area, they could have occurred on a Texas Panhandle lake, a California beach or on a Iowa farm.

Read this book to remind you of your own childhood or to remind you of a childhood you wish you had lived!!

Summer adventure at its finest!!
Released just in time for for summer reading, I heartily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure. Jim Man's style is easygoing, and at the same time compelling. I kept reading "just one more chapter" to find out what would happen next to Jim, Dwight, and the other colorful characters. This book truly is a return to a simpler time in the not too distant past. A time when kids explored the outside world on their own, and a Mother's parting words were "Be home in time for supper".

I've never read a book that made me laugh like "greenbelt"
I picked up the book on a Friday night. I was skeptical at best, but everybody leaves the bookstore with a book; and besides, the author was at the bookstore doing the dog and pony show trying to sell some of his books. Politely, I bought the book, came home and was mesmerized for the next four hours (I am a slow reader). I liked the size of the book, it wasn't real intimidating and I thought I would give it at least three chapters. That was all it took and I was hooked. A NOSTALGIC RETURN is exactly what I got. Mr. Man's book took me back to my own childhood and the amazement that I (and he)lived through it. Chapter after chapter was adventure, exploit, and just good ole' childhood mischief. I finished the book that night (to my wife's dislike). Several times she woke up and hit me with the pillow because the bed was shaking from my laughter. I honestly couldn't put the book down. Anyway, for what it is worth, I wish I had the book to look forward to. Write on Mr. Man, Bart boxwell

Greenbelt, Maryland: A Living Legacy of the New Deal (Creating the North American Landscape)
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (March, 2001)
Author: Cathy D. Knepper
Average review score:

A lesson in community spirit
What a powerful story Dr. Knepper tells of this entirely planned community originally created as an experiment in socialism. In addition to a thorough description of historical details and events, each person is so vividly painted in their full complexities as to make this a fascinating and almost breezy read.
I was captivated by this town who brought a developer's greed all the way to the Supreme Court, and the Capraesque fashion in which this community dealt with the McCarthy era witch hunt. I cannot recommend this enough as a sociology or government text book, as well as a worthy addition to any personal library.

The Six Sigma Handbook, Revised and Expanded : The Complete Guide for Greenbelts, Blackbelts, and Managers at All Levels

It's great if you don't know any better
As a Master Black Belt, I am typically critical of books that are published on Six Sigma. This is no exception. The book is schizophrenic in that it doesn't quite know if it wants to be a technical reference or a management handbook. I think it fails at both. There is really nothing new in the management sections, and this book really lacks the depth required to be an effective handbook.

There are three books on Six Sigma that I recommend for the Green Belt or Black Belt (Implementing Six Sigma --Breyfogle, The Six Sigma Revolution--Eckes, The Six Sigma Way--Pande). The Breyfogle book is a good technical handbook, while both the Eckes and Pande books are fantastic for Managers,Champions, MBB's, BB's, GB's, and all other employees engaged in a Six Sigma program. Of course no book is going to tell you everything you need to know.....Experience will, of course, teach you the most, but the books I mentioned will get you going.

Good Luck!

Reviewing for CSSBB? - use Breyfogle
If you are studying for the Six Sigma Black Belt certificate I recommend you use Breyfogle's book as your general reference. Breyfogle's book is more complete and structured in the exams format so its easier to study and reference during the exam.

Good luck.

The Complete Guide to Six Sigma
The title says it all. Thomas Pyzdek covers everything that one needs to know to successfully implement six sigma concepts. After a brief introduction of the history behind six sigma, Pyzdek provides a detailed summary of the tools, methodologies and techniques necessary to successfuly tackle a six sigma project. Both "soft and hard" tools are described. The methodology is understandable. Pyzdek takes special care to explain where specific techniques can (and cannot) be applied. This is especially helpful for the reader that has forgotten more then they remember about statistics.

Pyzdek is ideallly suited to write this book. He is one of a limited few authors that has a strong statitical education coupled with an in-depth knowledge of business. PLUS he can write.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone that is serious about making improvements through the application of six sigma methodology. Everything that ones needs to know is here in one book. And for those that need additional information the references are excellent.
